Mercedes-Benz Previews Affordable Electric G-Wagon

According to Electrek, Mercedes-Benz is in the process of creating a more affordable counterpart to its highly anticipated all-electric G-Class SUV. This electric vehicle will be a smaller and less expensive rendition of the renowned G-Wagon, as confirmed by CEO Ola Kallenius at the IAA Mobility 2023 event in Munich. Kallenius mentioned that the “baby” G-Class EV will be notably more compact than its counterpart and will offer an enjoyable driving experience.

This model is a continuation of the G-Class EQG concept, which was first announced at the IAA Mobility 2021 event. German newspaper Automobilwoche reports that the company has been planning a smaller all-electric G-Wagon for several years and suggests that version could pass. name “g-class” with appropriate lowercase “g”. Kallenius told CNBC that he thinks of the vehicle as “the daughter or son of the capital G.”

Details are few, but it will be based on a purely electric powertrain and should have four-wheel drive, especially since Kallenius assures that it will be fun to drive. As for the promise of a cheaper G-Class vehicle, the new Mercedes G-Class SUV starts at $140,000, so it’s not hard to get in for less than that. However, if the company wants to adopt to the mass market, a small price drop to $100,000-$120,000 is unlikely to do the trick. The actual pricing is still a mystery.

We still have a long time to wait before we get behind the wheel of this little wonder. The vehicle’s powertrain will likely be based on the future MB.EA platform, Mercedes’ own battery technology. This platform will likely not appear in vehicles until 2025, with a smaller, cheaper G-Series electric car launching in 2026 at the earliest.
